So if you receive the gifts before Christmas, what do you do?

Do you open them right away?
Put them under the tree?
Ask the sender?
Or what?

I would wait until Christmas day since it is a gift sent for Christmas. Certainly phone or email the sender and say you received a gift from them in the mail and you can’t wait until Christmas day to open it. That way they know you received it and also don’t wonder why you haven’t said thank you yet for the gift.

if it isn’t specified, or implied, then you do what you want to do. Just be sure to keep observing proper etiquette and send a proper thank you card.

If I know that I will be seeing the sender on or near the holidays, I keep the package until I can be with that person; so they have the benefit of seeing me open something they’ve specifically chosen for me.

Otherwise, I will generally open the outer package. If they’ve paid the extra to have the inner package wrapped, I will place it under the tree; otherwise, I will already know what it is.

Of course, as soon as it is opened one should send out a thank you note right away!

It is really up to you and how you feel about the gift. If you want to open it immeidately then do so.

Our family saves all of these boxes and opens them up Christmas eve. If the presents are wrapped we put them under the tree for morning. If not we enjoy the family gift. It is a fun Christmas eve tradition for us.

Generally we put it under the tree and call the sender letting them know we received the package.
